Planning to build a CNC frame, 3D printer, workbench or modular structure? There are two main aluminium profile systems available on the market: V-SLOT and T-SLOT. Although they look similar at first glance, they differ in groove shape, accessory system and intended use. In this article, we explain everything you need to know to choose the right profile for your project.
What is a V-SLOT profile?
A V-SLOT profile is an aluminium structural profile with a characteristic V-shaped groove (bevelled at 45°) on each face. This groove serves a dual function:
- Running track for V-Wheel rollers — the wheels roll directly along the groove walls, making it possible to build linear motion systems without additional rails
- Mounting channel for T-NUTs and bolts — allowing components to be fixed anywhere along the profile length
The V-SLOT standard comes from the OpenBuilds project and is widely used in the maker, CNC and 3D printing communities. The groove is 6 mm wide and is compatible with the OpenBuilds accessory ecosystem.

What is a T-SLOT profile?
T-SLOT 30×30 — T-groove designed for industrial nuts
A T-SLOT profile is an industrial standard aluminium profile with a T-shaped groove. Unlike V-SLOT, the T-SLOT groove is not designed for guiding rollers — it serves only as a mounting channel for nuts, connectors and accessories.
T-SLOT is a standard used for decades in machinery, automation and steel construction. The groove is 8 mm wide (in the 30×30 and 30×60 series) or 10 mm (in the 40×40, 45×45 and 40×80 series), which translates into compatibility with typical M6 or M8 bolts.
- Greater rigidity for the same cross-section thanks to thicker walls
- Broader ecosystem of industrial accessories (corner brackets, connectors, hinges)
- Higher loads — preferred for machines and work tables

Key differences — V-SLOT vs T-SLOT
| Feature | V-SLOT | T-SLOT |
|---|---|---|
| Groove shape | V (bevelled 45°) | T (rectangular) |
| Groove width | 6 mm | 8 mm or 10 mm |
| Roller guidance | ✅ Yes (V-Wheel) | ❌ No |
| Accessory mounting | T-NUT M5 (6 mm groove) | T-NUT M6 / M8 |
| Standard | OpenBuilds (20 mm) | Industrial (30/40/45 mm) |
| Rigidity | Medium | High |
| Accessory ecosystem | OpenBuilds / maker | Industrial (broad) |
| Typical applications | CNC, 3D printers, robotics | Machines, tables, automation |
When should you choose V-SLOT?
V-SLOT is the number one choice for projects requiring linear motion. If your structure needs to move — the X/Y/Z axis of a 3D printer, a CNC carriage, a plotter — V-SLOT is hard to beat, because V-Wheel rollers run directly in the groove.
Choose V-SLOT when:
- You are building a 3D printer (especially CoreXY or Cartesian style)
- You are designing a CNC router or laser plotter
- You need a linear axis without dedicated guide rails
- Your project is based on the OpenBuilds ecosystem
- You are building a lightweight, modular maker structure
When should you choose T-SLOT?
T-SLOT is the industrial standard when rigidity and load capacity are the priority. Thicker walls and a wider groove provide stronger connections for the same cross-section.
Choose T-SLOT when:
- You are building a work table, shelving unit or assembly station
- Your machine carries high static loads
- You need compatibility with industrial accessories (corner brackets, hinges, guide rails)
- You are designing a machine enclosure or automation system
- You want a larger cross-section (30×30, 40×40, 45×45) at a reasonable price
What about C-BEAM?
C-BEAM is a special version of the V-SLOT profile in a 40×80 mm size, with a characteristic cut-out (channel) running through the centre. It combines a profile and a guide in one element — ideal for the Z axis of 3D printers and CNC routers.
The Xtreme Mini V-Wheel moves inside the C-BEAM channel, eliminating side play and ensuring exceptional motion precision. If you need a rigid linear axis with long travel, C-BEAM is the answer.

V-SLOT and T-SLOT are two different systems for different applications — there is no single better one, only the right choice for a specific project. V-SLOT dominates maker and CNC projects thanks to its built-in roller tracks. T-SLOT rules in industry and workshops, where rigidity and load capacity matter most. Both systems can be cut to any size and combined within one structure.
